The film canister auger is used to precisely remove the amount of soil needed to bury a film canister for tracking purposes, approximately 5mm below the surface of the soil/grass.

Precisely recess the film canister just below the soil/grass surface.
Avoid extensive scraping and earthworks to dig a hole for burying, as this can also cause increased soil disturbance, which can give the dog a clue that something has been buried there.
Back-friendly
The drill bit is screwed into the ground using a screwing motion over the crossbar. The soil is excavated and remains in the housing. The excavated soil can then be removed from the housing by foot or hand.
